Choosing a Hospital Bed for Home Use

6/12/2026 ASMS EditorialΒ· 6 min read

Manual, semi-electric, and full-electric

Manual beds use hand cranks to adjust head, foot, and height. Semi-electric powers head and foot but not height. Full-electric powers all three.

For long-term home use with a caregiver present, semi-electric is usually the sweet spot: powered where it matters, and easier on the budget.

Weight capacity and sizing

Standard hospital beds support up to 450 lb. Bariatric frames go to 600 lb+. Match the frame rating to the patient's weight plus mattress and bedding.

Rails, mattress, and pressure care

Half-rails are the most common choice β€” they support transfers without fully caging the sleeper. Pair with a foam or alternating-pressure mattress for patients at risk of pressure injuries.

Delivery, assembly, and returns

Beds ship in two or three cartons. Most models assemble in 30–45 minutes with two people. Ask about white-glove setup on bulk orders.
